About The Event
One of the most unique musical experiences in the South, Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars is joined by collaborators to ignite a night of rock, funk, blues, and musical experimentation inspired by the unbridled creativity of Anderson’s landmark murals in the Ocean Springs Community Center. This year, for the 5th concert in the series, we take it outdoors to the streets of downtown Ocean Springs, surrounded by animated light projections of Anderson’s murals.
Each year, Dickinson assembles a cast of professional musicians from across the region and country to pay homage to Anderson’s coastal magnum opus. The music they perform is arranged by Dickinson, who first conceived of the concert series after having an experience with Walter Anderson’s murals. “...The phenomenon of hearing art or seeing music, I’ve never had that experience before except in this room,” says Dickinson of the Community Center. “Anderson’s murals come alive for me as orchestral score to an imagined animation.”
Luther Dickinson is joined on stage in 2021 by Kirk Joseph, founding member of the Dirty Dozen Brass and leader of Kirk Joseph’s Backyard Groove; Jake Eckert, New Orleans Suspects; Big Chief Juan Pardo, The Golden Comanches Mardi Gras Indians; Callaghan Miles, teenage bass prodigy; Sharde “Fifemastor” Thomas, blues torchbearer and granddaughter of fife and drum pioneer Otha Turner; and Alvin Ford, Jr., New Orleans drummer (Dumpstaphunk and Trombone Shorty)
