Rolland Golden “River and Reverie: Paintings of the Mississippi”

May 3- August 15, 2012

Opening Reception and Book Signing
Thursday, May 3, 2012
5:30pm-7:30pm

The Walter Anderson Museum of Art continues to pursue the goals of its mission statement by exhibiting works which embody the unique and exploratory nature of the creative spirit.

Beginning May 3, 2012 and continuing through August 15, 2012 visitors are invited to discover and rediscover the dynamic beauty of the Mississippi River through the exhibition  River and Reverie:  Paintings of the Mississippi, works by Rolland Golden.  Born in New Orleans, Golden has traveled extensively across the country and beyond in a career of more than five decades, painting the people and places that he’s encountered.  The artist now lives in Natchez, Mississippi, and his love of his home is evident in the artistic expression of these paintings, most of which were completed between 2009 and 2011.  Last year, Mr. Golden was inducted into the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters for his enormous contribution to the visual arts.

Included in this collection of works are almost forty paintings of the Mississippi River, from many different vantage points and times of day.  A painting of the ethereal misty dawn, trees with Spanish moss set against the expansiveness of the water, is juxtaposed by that of a fiery sunset, the dying sunlight lighting the river up as though imagined by Hollywood.  The variety of the images remind us that each experience of the Mississippi River is individual and unlike any other.  The absence of human presence in the works invites interpretation, projection, and redefinition.

River and Reverie:  Paintings of the Mississippi will be on view in the main galleries of the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs from May 3 – August 15, 2012.

The public is invited to the Opening Reception and Exhibition book signing on Thursday, May 3, 2012, from 6-8 pm. The event is free to members and guests with admission.

Mississippi Arts Commission’s educational artist in residence program features an exhibition with our Artist in Residence Ellen Ellis Lee and examples of student artworks created during the artist’s month-long residency at WAMA.

Well known local mixed media sculpture artist, Ellen Ellis Lee was WAMA’s artist in residence in March, 2012.  She instructed elementary students in sculpture construction in the afternoons for 4 weeks, at no charge.  Additionally, Ms. Lee held open studio classes for children.  A special adult workshop was also scheduled.

This exhibition of artworks by the Artist in Residence and students will be displayed in May through July, 2012 at WAMA’s Jo Love Little Gallery.
